June 21 Ganolsavam 09 Ticket Sales Kicked offTicket sales for the upcoming Malayalam live orchestra was kicked off by FOMAA president Mr. John Titus in a simple ceremony at Mar Thoma Church Hall in Kent, WA. The organizing committee chairman Mr. Santhosh Nair handed over the first ticket to Mr. Titus. Mr. Santhosh spoke about the event and Care & Share Vice President Mr. Ashley Elenjickal briefed about Care & Share and the cause, Pain & Palliative Care, supported by this fund raising event. Event coordinator Mr. Jojo Chalissery, Kerala Association of Washington president Mr. George Daniel, and FOMAA executive committee member Mr. P. M. Mathew were also present at the function. September 08 Heart Patient receives Care & Share Support through ADC&WS15th August 2008 - Care & Sharer received request to support a heart patient who has 90% block in his main valve. The patient is a fisherman and come from a very poor background in Chellanam. The angioplasty operation would cost more than Rs 1,20,000 ($3,000), and there is no way the family can afford it by themselves. The family's savings and the support provided by their well-wishers could only raise about $1,000. Care & Share provided $1,750 to meet his treatment expenses. Care & Share worked with Alleppey Diocesan Charitable & Social Welfare Society to send the funds to the patient. Fund Raising food stall during KAOW Cricket Tournament10th August 2008 - Members of the Kerala Association of Washington ran a fund raising food stall for Care & Share during the association's cricket tournament. A team of thirteen housewives prepared delicious home food such as idli, vada, cutlet, and sandwiches and served them to the players and viewers. The tournament lasted for the whole day, from 8am to 8pm. A total of $950 was raised, and these funds will be used towards Care & Share's project with National Association of Blind (NAB) Kerala Branch. NAB Kerala has identified 26 vision/hearing impaired children with multiple disabilities. The project tries to empower them through various therapies and physical training to make them self sufficient to the greatest extent possible. Care & Share supports 25% of the total cost of the project at the expense of $1600 annually for two years. Chronic kidney patient receives Care & Share Support through ESSS25th July 2008 - Care & Share received a request to support a 32-year-old man suffering from acute kidney dysfunction. He was a daily wager and has been rendered jobless since the ailment. His family includes his mother, wife and two kids. The treatment costs around Rs 16,000 ($400), which includes eight dialyses and costly medicines. Care & Share worked with Cochin Kidney Foundation to arrange 20 dialyses for the patient. In addition, through Ernakulam Social Service Society (ESSS), Care & Share supported the patient with Rs 40,000 ($1000) towards the treatment costs. 20 households receive Rain Water Harvesting Tanks15th July 2008 - The construction of twenty rain water harvesting tanks in Chellanam and Methala panchayats have been completed. Both of these coastal villages are surrounded by saline lakes and badly lack clean drinking water. Care and share worked with Mother Theresa Health Care & Charitable Services in Chellanam and Kottapuram Integrated Development Society to identify the right beneficiaries and to administer the work. A total of $6000 was spent towards this cause at an estimated cost of $300 (Rs 12,000) per tank. Care & Share to Support S.O.S Children's village in India1st July 2008 - SOS Children's Villages of India is a non-profit, non-government, voluntary organization, committed to the care of children in need. The aim and objective of SOS-India is to provide long-term, family-based care to orphaned children and to strengthen disadvantaged families as a preventive measure against abandonment and social neglect of children. In 2008, Care & Share is sponsoring six children at its Alwaye center in Eranakulam district. The annual expense for this cause is $900. KAOW works with Care & Share to help 8th grade student10th June 2008 - Kerala Association of Washington received a request to help the son of a fisherman from Alappuzaha, Kerala who is undergoing treatment Acute Myelogenous Leukemia with maturation. To maximize the benefit, Kerala Association worked with Care & Share to raise funds for this 14-year-old. The boy’s family had raised funds locally and through the newspapers, but fell short by Rs. 25,000 ($600). Care & Share supported this family with $600 to meet the remaining expenses towards the required treatment cost. For more details visit http://www.kaow.org/lenin.htm Rehabilitation of Cancer Patient's family thru Pallium India16th May 2008 - Mr. Vijayakumar, pancreatic cancer patient, was under the care Pallium India for more than four months before he expired at the end of April. He had to sell his property and house, on a mere five cents of land, to meet the treatment expenses and his elder daughter's marriage expenses. His mother, wife and two younger daughters were temporarily living in a shed in that was 3/4 of a cent ( approximately 320 square feet). With the funding support from Care & Share, Pallium India helped the family to build a small house. Care & Share also provided the financial assistance required for Mr. Vijayakumar's second daughter to complete her second year of Teachers Training Certificate Program (TTC). A total of $1000 was paid to Pallium India to take care of the expenses. Care & Share increases Cochin Kidney Foundation Support to 250 in 20081st May 2008 - Kidney-related diseases are increasing exponentially in India, especially in Kerala. According to the statistics provided by Cochin Kidney Foundation (CKF), in Kochi city alone, 6000 dialyses are done in a month, out of which more than 1200 need financial support. Care & Share provided 145 dialyses through CKF in 2007, but decided to increase that number to 250 in 2008 due to the rising need. With the cost of one dialysis at Rs 1000 ($25), the total support for this cause is around $6250. |
